This workshop is designed to give participants a combination of lecture and hands-on laboratory experience using real-time PCR methods. As typical examples of the use of real-time PCR we will measure differential expression of both differentiated and non-differentiated cells. Students will gain experience using DNA binding dyes and hydrolysis probe chemistries as well as multiplex real-time PCR. Lectures will include an overview of gene expression, assay design and optimization, template preparation, analysis of results, additional applications of real-time PCR technology, and more. Some previous experience using standard PCR or real time PCR is helpful but not necessary for workshop attendees.

This workshop is offered in collaboration with Helixis Incorporated. Helixis Inc., headquartered in Carlsbad, California, develops innovative nucleic acid tools for research applications. The company was founded in 2007 through a unique collaboration between molecular biologists and engineers in the labs of Nobel Laureate David Baltimore, Ph.D., and Axel Scherer, Ph.D., at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). The company is developing high performance instrument systems designed for individual researcher access and use. The initial commercial product, PIXO™, is the first personal real-time PCR system that brings qPCR technology within reach of every researcher. Providing all the high performance features found in large, high priced systems, PIXO™ is compact and affordably priced for individual researchers at the same price as many standard PCR thermal cyclers.
